The aim of the competition is to develop radical ideas for a livable and future-proof urban quarter on a former industrial site in the town of Backnang, which has 37,000 inhabitants, in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg. The approx. 16.7 hectare large Backnang West neighbourhood has been part of the Network of the International Building Exhibition 2027 since 2019. It was submitted by the city of Backnang.
Competition process: The competition is organised as a one-stage, non-open urban planning competition with an upstream selection process. A total of 24 participants are admitted to the competition. The competition organiser selects 6 participants in advance. Another 18 participants qualify based on their convincing ideas. The process is anonymous.
Deadline ideas competition: 4 June 2020, 4 pm
Selection of sketch qualifications: 23 June 2020, 9 am
Award for ideas competition: The 18 selected participants receive a remuneration of 2.000 € including VAT.
Estimated processing period for urban planning competition: July – October 2020, (WN 28 – WN 43)
Participants: Urban planners and architects, also in combination with landscape architects and mobility experts.
Award for urban planning competition: 1st prize EUR 48,000, 2nd prize EUR 30,000, 3rd prize EUR 18,000, Distinctions EUR 24,000
